Crewe Alexandra 0, Ipswich 1 (24 Aug 2010)

Very exciting evening match at Gresty Road (League Cup round 2). Despite being the underdogs from League 2, Crewe put in a sterling performance. They gave  Ipswich a real run for their money. For most of the game, Crewe looked like the team most likely to win. It was only a goal from a corner late on in extra time that gave Ipswich the win – tired legs by then and a failure to clear the ball gave the Tractor Men their chance (though admittedly it was a well taken strike).

All the Crewe boys put in a good effort. They displayed more skill, but did give Ipswich more space on the ball a lot of the time whereas Ipswich would have three guys harrying our player whenever we had possession. The Ipswich goalie, sadly, made a fantastic and ultimately match-winning save to deny Byron Moore’s great fizzing shot.

4 yellow cards for Ipswich as they showed themselves adept at the tactic usually employed with success by poorer teams against Crewe – kick the boys into submission. But then, you wouldn’t expect anything else from a team managed by Roy Keane. Persnally, I felt the ref let them off lightly, and they should have had at least one red and a couple more yellows.

At least there was some satisfaction to be had by baiting Roy Keane throughout the match, and  a well deserved couple of chants of  “Championship? You’re having a laugh”.

Match report for anyone interested.
